goetz gruenberg - bio

Goetz Gruenberg was born in Coburg Germany 1968. For his father being an actor Goetz grew up in an artistic environment. He picked up the tenorsaxophone at the age of 14.

After his first musical training he started to work as a musician. He received a scholarship at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Ma in 1991 where he studied with Billy Pierce and Jerry Bergonzi.

1993 he received a scholarship at the New School for Social Research, Jazz and Contemporary Music in NYC. Amongst his teachers there were Bill Evans, Rich Perry, Joe Chambers, Buster Williams, Steve Hall, Arnie Lawrence, Cecil McBee, Hal Galper, Reggie Workman, Kenny Werner.

During his six years stay in New York he worked as a sideman and bandleader. He performed with musicians such as Cecil Bridgewater, Richard Bona, Eddie Allen, Jon Davis, Ali Jackson and many others.

He spent nine month in Puerto Rico workin with local musicians such as Polito Huerta and Endel Dueno.

After returning to Europe Goetz toured around, spent some time in Morocco where he did studiowork and performed at the Festival Essaouiera). After four years back in Germany he moved to Kiev, Ukraine where he spent three years extensively touring, performing, teaching. (Sylvain Beufs "Octovoice", Jazzfestival Koktebel feat. Lew Soloff). Currently Goetz lives in Germany.
